Oregon Writers Share Their Words In Yachats

Yachats' Green Salmon hosts "Off the Page" a collaboration of Oregon writers A collection of Oregon writers will present Off the Page, a celebration of poetry and prose on Saturday, April 25 at 7pm in Yachats. The event takes place at the Green Salmon Coffeehouse, located at Highway 101 and Second Street. Doors open and music starts at 6:30pm. The reading performance begins at 7pm. Admission is free and open to all ages.

Now in its third year, Off the Page is an encouraging celebration of creative expression.

Eight Oregon writers hailing from Yachats to Portland to Bend will share their work. Featured writers include: Khloella Brateng, Sheila Evans, Flip Garrison, Kake Huck, Kate Maloy, Drew Myron, Rick Schultze and Mark Thalman. In addition, Yachats singerand songwriter Richard Sharpless will perform.

About the Writers
Khlo Brateng, of South Beach, is an actress, singer, musician and writer. She plays harp, sings with the Central Coast Chorale and works as a graphic designer. Her poetry, short stories and flash fiction appear in her 2008 chapbook Words Out Loud. See www.khloella.com.

Sheila Evans, of Yachats, is the author of six novels and a memoir. Her latest work is Kevin's Quicksand, a novel published in January. Evans worked for 20 years as a high school English teacher in California before moving to the Oregon Coast, where she has lived for 20 years. See www.sheilaevansbooks.com.

Flip Garrison, a performance poet, lives in Lincoln City and has performed with slam poetry teams in Utah and Oregon. In 2008, Garrison won second place in the Eugene Slam Poetry competition.

Kake Huck, of Bend, is a professor of speech at Central Oregon Community College. Her poetry has been published in numerous journals and anthologies, including Beyond Forgetting, a collection of poetry and short prose about Alzheimer's disease. The just-released book features works by 100 contemporary writers doctors, nurses, social workers, hospice workers, family members whose lives have been touched by Alzheimer's. Kate Maloy, of Yachats, is author of the award-winning novel Every Last Cuckoo. Lauded by a variety of publications, from the Boston Globe to People magazine, Every Last Cuckoo earned American Library Association's Reader List Award for Women's fiction, and was a top five Book Sense Pick. In addition, Maloy has written a memoir, A Stone Bridge North: Reflections in a New Life, and a nonfiction book, Birth or Abortion? Private Struggles in a Political World.

Drew Myron, of Yachats, is a freelance writer, poet and Off the Page creator. When she initiated a monthly writing group four years ago, Myron drew together an assortment of creative individuals with various writing skills and experience. Buoyed by the belief that writing needs to crawl out of the journal and soar into the community, Off the Page became an annual event to showcase local writers and celebrate the power of creative expression. Rick Schultze, of Yachats, is a columnist for the South Lincoln County News and the Siuslaw News. He previously worked as an agent, promoter and performer and shares his rock-n-roll trials and triumphs in his memoir, When Movie Was a Band: The True Story of My Short Life as a Rhythm Guitar Player. Mark Thalman, of Forest Grove, is a poet and teacher. His book Catching the Limit will be published this year by Bedbug Press as part of their Northwest Poetry Series. His work has appeared in CutBank, Many Mountains Moving, and Beyond Forgetting, a collection of poetry and prose about Alzheimer's disease.
