Diver Dies at Newport Jetty

On 06/26/2010 at approximately 4:24pm Newport Police were called to a diver in distress on the South Beach Jetty. Newport Police on scene contacted the Coast Guard and the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office Marine Patrol as the diver had not been located.

The missing diver, 63 year old Larry M. Johnson Sr. of Toledo. Oregon had been diving with his grandson in the bay and did not return to the surface. A local dive instructor, also diving in the area, was alerted by family members and asked to assist in locating the missing diver.


After a search of the area, Johnson was located by the diver in approximately 30 feet of water. After being brought to the surface, CPR was started by Newport Police and was taken over by Newport Fire and Rescue and Pacific West Ambulance. Johnson was pronounced dead at the scene by Paramedic personnel. Investigation is continuing into the cause of death.
